Clothing protects the human body, naked and vulnerable, from the weather, as cold, rain, sun, and for security reasons. Each article of clothing also has a cultural and social significance. Humans are the only among the mammals known to wear clothing, sometimes with the exception of pets clothed by the owners.

People also decorate their bodies with makeup or cosmetics and other adornments, plus size, color, my hair of their head, their beard, mustache and sometimes decorate their skin with tattoos and piercings. All these decorations contribute to the overall effect and message, but do not constitute clothing per se.

In practice the function of clothing is to protect the human body from dangers of the environment: adverse weather conditions (eg sunlight, extreme cold), insects, toxic substances, weapons and other abrasives, and other risks. Clothing can protect against many causes that may damage the naked human body. In some cases clothing protects the environment from contamination, eg. surgical gowns.

The man has shown extreme inventiveness in finding new solutions to the practical needs of clothing and the distinction between clothing and other protective gear is not always clear.
